About African Youth Conference on Climate Change - AYICC




African Youth Conference on Climate Change will take place in Victoria Falls in Harare Zimbabwe. The conference is organized by the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change (AYICC)

The AfriYOCC Objectives, Outcomes and Outputs
The overarching aims of the AfriYOCC, are to create a platform for African youths and AYICC leadership and membership to come together to discuss current and emerging issues on climate change in Africa, to network amongst the membership through sharing knowledge and actions, to hold face-to-face strategic meetings on country and local level activities, and to hold elections for new leadership within AYICC.

The objectives of the congress are to:
  • Bring together 200 youth leaders from across Africa to discuss about climate change’s effects on their respective communities;
  • Develop and publish an African youth position paper on effect of climate change and a youth position paper ahead of COP20, COP21 and the UN Secretary General’s Summit on Climate Change for consideration by African governments of AYICC member countries;
  • To provide a platform for youth interactions and sharing of best practices from partnering organizations on climate change and launch of the AYICC best practices database for youth actions on climate change in Africa ( including to provide a platform for AYICC leaders and members to review AYICC Strategy, leadership and operations);
  • Strengthen the AYICC African youth climate strategy  and national level progress report templates on youth action and advocacy on climate change;
  • Develop the requisite skills needed by African youth to actively participate in climate change negotiations thereby influencing political decisions and policies at the national, regional and international levels;
  • Build capacity through various side events on best practices in adaptation, mitigation, communication, education and public awareness and advocacy.
 outcomes
At the end of the conference, youth participants and AYICC members will leave with;
(a)   A clear understanding of the AYICC strategy and operations;
(b)   A draft African youth position paper for COP20, COP21 and the UN Secretary General’s Summit on Climate Change for consideration of African governments (thereby connecting directly with country delegations for effective and holistic negotiation processes);
(c)    Ideas and practices and new knowledge to take home to member and other countries;
(d)   New partners to liaise with on climate change issues across the continent (build membership and partnerships of AYICC)

The outputs include, inter alia,
(a)   New AYICC Leadership put in place and with a new mandate;
(b)   A position paper for COP20, COP21 and the UN Secretary General’s Summit on Climate Change on behalf of African Youth
(c)    Conference report;
(d)   A final Best Practices Database of AYICC and Youth actions on climate change for dissemination through online or other channels
(e)   An African youth strategy on climate change (AYICC Africa Strategy)
(f)     Revamped website
Conference participants will also be expected to share with and transmit to the respective governments, the African youth position on climate change and the conference report.
